"nbc 10 news" starts now. >> remembering a fallen officer. here is a live picture from new york where law enforcement from all over the country are honoring a comrade killed in last month's ambush in brooklyn. in a live report, how philadelphia police are paying their respects today. the family of shane montgomery says he has come

home, after divers found the local college student's body in the schuylkill river. you'll hear from his family who wants to thank the community this morning. it is a foggy but mild day outside. here's a picture in south philly where traffic is moving along all right, but if you're on your way to the airport, check with your airline because the fog is causing flight delays averaging over an hour. good morning. welcome back to "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary conners. it's just after 10:00 on this sunday. let's check in now with meteorologist michelle grossman to find out when that fog is going to clear. it's been with us all morning long. >> it sure has. fog all across the area. also seeing some light rain falling still. this picture, yeah tells the whole story. we are seeing fog in the entire area. hard to see center city. it gives you an idea. we're also seeing some wet roadways as well with that rain

falling. down to a mile in millville to the north and west. we're looking at a mile in allentown. temperatures right now, they are mild. we're looking at 47 in philadelphia. 41 in reading. 50 right now in millville and 57 in wildwood. these temperatures are going to continue to climb as we head throughout the afternoon. right now we're seeing some light rain falling across the area. not everywhere. that's what we're going to see the next several hours. for today, plan on a mild one. plan on some clouds and also spotty showers. by 11:00, 54. by 1:00, 57. by 3:00 p.m. 60 degrees. we'll talk more about the big cooldown. we're talking 20s as a daytime high and we'll do that in just a few minutes. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking into a shooting death that led to a three-car accident. nbc 10 was on the scene of the crash along deli street in north philadelphia. police say a man in his 30s was shot in the chest while driving his minivan.

the minivan crashed into two parked cars. police have not released any further information, but if they do we'll pass it along. in camden county a man crashed his car into a creek this morning, but he's doing okay. police say when they arrived on the scene at route 38 the driver had already gotten out of the water and was sitting on top of his car. this happened just before 7:00 this morning. police are looking into what may have led up to this accident. police are investigating an incident involving an exploding mailbox. nbc 10 was on secoya road in cherry hill where neighbors called police to report loud noises in the area around midnight. officers tell us one cast iron mailbox exploded. fortunately, nobody was hurt. so far, police have not made any arrests. right now, a memorial service is getting under way to honor new york city police officer wenjian liu. he is the second nypd member to be laid to rest in a week.

this is a live picture outside the funeral home. a gunman killed officer liu and his partner rafael ramos last month while they were sitting in their patrol car. as you can see, plenty of people are surrounding that funeral home. we know that some of those at the service include members from the philadelphia police department. they are in new york right now to show their support. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in northeast philadelphia, where those officers boarded buses this morning. >> reporter: some 80 officers left here a little after 6:00 this morning, so they are in new york right now for that service. as are officers from other departments in our area. take a look here. i just saw this tweet from police with the honor guard preparing to participate in the funeral of nypd officer wenjian liu. and some of the officers are attending their second memorial service in just over a week. >> we want to show our respects. >> reporter: boarding buses

bound for new york this officer says his presence at officer wenjian liu's memorial today is more than a choice it's a personal obligation. >> there's a lot of sorrow but there's also a lot of pride in the police community, so we like to go up and support our brothers and sisters. >> reporter: the display this morning reads, pray for nypd officer liu as he is laid to rest sunday. last week more than 100 officers from philadelphia and neighboring departments attended the funeral for officer rafael ramos. >> it was very surreal. it was very strong. it was very moving. >> reporter: philly sergeant jason somerville was one of about 25,000 from around the country in attendance last saturday and he's back again. off duty. no pay. to respect and reflect. >> every single officer in attendance for officer ramos's funeral in the back of their minds, i'm sure they were thinking this can be them. every time we get dressed, we put on this uniform, and go out there and serve our community.

within one day, you may be able to save a life deliver a life or even give our own life within eight hours. >> reporter: and the officers from philadelphia will be lining up along the procession route and then they will return back here to philadelphia later this afternoon. live in the northeast i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, matt. yesterday in brooklyn new york mayor bill de blasio and police commissioner bill bratton arrived together at officer liu's wake. bratton has urged officers to refrain from making any political statements. last week they turned their backs on mayor de blasio during the funeral for rafael ramos. some have criticized the mayor for what they call sympathy for the police protesters.

today we have done what we promised. we have found and brought shane home. >> that was karen mont governor romney -- montgomery, mother of shane montgomery. the family says dive crews recovered shane's body from the schuylkill river yesterday. tomorrow, the medical examiner is expected to officially identify the remains. crews found the body at the bottom of the schuylkill in manayunk behind the manayunk brewery brewery. shane disappeared in the early morning hours of thanksgiving day after a night out with friends at nearby kildare's pub. the family tells us the discovery means that shane has come home after this long search. >> this community -- i don't know if we can say thank you. i don't know if we could ever repay what this community did for our family. they were there every step of the way. >> police say they do not suspect foul play. the family has yet to release funeral arrangements. we will keep you posted.

tomorrow in northeastern pennsylvania, the man accused of killing a state trooper and injuring another during an ambush is scheduled for a preliminary hearing. eric frein is scheduled to appear in pike county court. he's charged in the deadly shooting at the state police barracks in blooming grove in september. police say frein was then on the run for about seven weeks until investigators captured him. this morning, philadelphia police are look for the gunman wanted for murdering a limo driver who had only been on the job for a week. the owner of the car service tells us a passenger taken to delancey street in west philadelphia shot his driver last night. the owner of the limo company also says the gunman stole a cell phone at about $100 in cash. this is the third murder in philadelphia so far in 2015. neighbors near the scene say they're disturbed by this kind of violence so early in the new year. >> we've had some issues on this 5400 block of delancey street for some years, but we were able to clean it up with the help of

the 18th police district and some community activism and it has gotten much better. much better. so kind of sad to see this occur on this block since it has turned around so greatly in the past. >> police say that right now, they are interviewing the victim's girlfriend who is inside the car and witnessed the shooting, but was not hurt. pennsylvania state police have captured one of two escaped inmates who broke out of a burkes county prison. timothy hostetter is back behind bars this morning. he was picked up in pottsville schuylkill county. right now, raymond martinez is still on the run. investigators say the men set off a fire alarm at the warnersville community correction center on friday. they managed to escape and got away in a silver minivan. a trial is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning in philadelphia for a former iron worker's boss accused of racketeering. 73-year-old joseph dockerty is the last defendant in a group of 12 members of iron workers local

401, charged by federal prosecutors. the prosecutors say the members used violence and even arson, like a fire at the site of a quaker meeting house to intimidate builders into using their union's labor on construction projects. the other 11 members in this group have also pleaded guilty. tomorrow, real housewives of new jersey star teresa guidice will begin serving her sentence. she hid assets to bankruptcy creditors. her sentence is 15 months. she'll serve her time at a federal prison in connecticut. guidice's husband joe is also facing jail time for related offenses. his sentence won't start, though, until teresa is out. >> deserves a lot of credit. >> still ahead, we are learning more about a 7-year-old sole survivor of this small plane

was behind the cyber attack against sony entertainment, and the terror threats against movie theaters set to show the comedy film "the interview." the movie shows a fictional assassination of north korean leader kim jong-un. this morning at the vatican, pope francis named 15 new cardinals, selecting them from 14 different countries. the vatican says the move reflects the diversity of the church and its growth in asia and africa. also, in an address today, to a crowd at st. peter's square the pontiff made a surprise announcement that he will lead a meeting of all cardinals in february to talk about church reforms. we have some new information this morning in the search for the missing airasia flight. crews have recovered three more bodies believed to be the victims of the tragedy. they also found a fifth piece of debris. they say is from the wreckage. meanwhile, searchers have zeroed in on what they think is the fuselage of the plane. so far, 34 bodies have been

recovered. that leaves 128 passengers and crew still missing. the flight disappeared one week ago on december 28th. it was leaving indonesia, but did not make it across the java sea. now to an update on that deadly plane crash in kentucky in which only a 7-year-old girl survived. the ntsb has arrived back at the wreck site within the last hour. it was late on friday night when the small plane went down, killing everybody onboard except for the 7-year-old girl sailor gutzer. she walked nearly a mile in dark and cold conditions with no shoes to find help at the first house she reached. relatives say sailor used the plane's burning wing to light a branch just so she could find her way through the woods. >> the little girl 7 or 8 years old, standing there bleeding legs and all scratched up. arms scratched up. and she said her mom and dad were dead and that she had been

in a plane crash. >> investigators have just arrived back at the scene. the pilot reported engine trouble, and then air traffic controllers lost contact. 40 minutes later, that's when sailor made her way to larry wilkins' home. her parents, cousin, and sister all died in the crash. we have some new video of a ship that ran aground last night off the coast of england. this is what it looks like today. this morning, crews had to check the stability of this 56,000-ton ship before starting a salvage operation. it's not exactly clear what caused the vessel to hit the bottom. all 25 people onboard have been rescued. jury selection is set to begin tomorrow in the boston marathon bombing trial. dzhokhar tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to setting off two bombs at the finish line of the 2013 marathon. the explosions left three people dead and more than 260 injured. tsarnaev is also charged with killing an m.i.t. police officer

in the days following the attack. on friday a federal judge denied a defense request to delay the trial so that the defense attorneys could have more time to prepare. if convicted, tsarnaev could face the death penalty. the south jersey man accused of going on a shooting rampage at a los angeles international airport is also due in court tomorrow. on friday, federal prosecutors announced that they are planning to seek the death penalty against paul ciancia, he is a salem county native. prosecutors claim the killing was premeditated. ciancia is accused of murdering a tsa officer and wounding three other people in november of 2013. he has pleaded not guilty to murder and related charges. a judge wants the case to be tried this year but that death penalty decision could delay it. it was a dangerous mission the first time around but a doctor from philadelphia is going back to west africa to help in the fight against ebola. you'll hear from her after the break.

it's a mission that can be both dangerous and rewarding. a doctor from the university of pennsylvania will return to west africa to treat ebola patients. nbc 10 was there in october when dr. trish henwood left for liberia. when she came home this late november, she underwent a 21-damon or thing period to confirm that she did not have any symptoms of the virus.

atlantic city. down to a mile in allentown. there it is the fog is out there this morning. take it slow on the roadways. we also have some wet roadways. 49 in philadelphia. it is 13 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. that southwesterly flow at 20 miles per hour. it's really helping to warm us up. temperatures across the region mainly in the 40s at this point. to the north and west we were in the 40s. 41 in allentown. 49 in wilmington. and then to the south and east 59 right now in wildwood. 52 in atlantic city. 52 in dover. enjoy the warm weather today, because it is short-lived. we're going to see the temperatures drop overnight. it's beginning to be a cold monday. getting colder from there. the mild air is in place today. cold on monday and tuesday. it's wednesday and thursday that arctic air really comes in. daytime high on thursday, just around 22. we're going to have gusty wind so it will feel more like the

teens. and then that cold air comes back into play on friday. and stays the best for quite some time. kind of plan on it in your day. bring your umbrellas. certainly seeing the clouds as well. a cold front will move through later. we could see as few a thunderstorms as possible. back behind this we're looking at clearing skies finally overnight. and some very cold air back behind it. thunderstorms possible. much warmer. 61 to 63. winds out of the southwest at 5 to 20 miles per hour. but gusting higher than that at times. 36 on monday. the sunshine returns. it will be colder winds gusting over 30 miles per hour. feeling like the low 30s. by tuesday, could see some snow as the system moves through. 29 on wednesday. windy. feeling like the mid 20s. feeling like the teens on thursday with a high temperature of 22 degrees. partly sunny on friday.
